Polygamy STILL practiced!
Mormons often claim that they have abandoned the actual practice of polygamy. But a Mormon man can still be married for eternity (“sealed”) to more than one wife, if his first wife dies or if they divorce. At least two of the present-day apostles are sealed to more than one wife, and have publicly acknowledged that they are looking forward to being with both of them in heaven. And polygamy is still commanded in their scriptures, Doctrine & Covenants section 132 (which you can read at the church website www.lds.org).
By: Richard
First: as a Mormon, I will admit I was very confused about this subject only a couple of weeks ago. But I recently learned something. A man is not MARRIED to two different women, only sealed. It would take a long time to explain it fully, but just know that being sealed simply means that you can be with someone forever in your “eternal family”. You aren’t married to two different people, simply, you can be with them in the next life.
Second: polygamy was originally commanded, back in the 1800′s. This was commanded so we could grow as a community. After the doctrine and covenants ended, and we no longer needed this commandment, we were commanded to stop. If we had a record of every prophets communication with god, we would have record that we were COMMANDED TO STOP. The fundamentalist latter day saints, or the FLDS, are a group of people who have continued the polygamy practice, a of they may call themselves mormons, but they are not the same religion as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

LikeDislikeBrooke, I was born and raised LDS sorry to tell you but being married and sealed is the same thing. You have been greatly mis-informed. Which brings up the point that Mormons really don’t know what they believe, the are worthless sheep who follow, believe, and do what they are told.

LikeDislikeWhether someone has strange beliefs or not does not make them worthless. That is frightening rhetoric.

Being married and sealed are not always the same thing. People get sealed to their parents all the time. If I were to be sealed to my mom that doesn’t mean I’m married to her!

and it’s true that sometimes Mormons don’t know all that they believe and that’s because we are probably still learning.
I’ve been born and raised in the church and I still don’t know all of the doctrine. I’m still learning about it all. That’s why it’s important to study our scriptures and go to church, etc.

LikeDislikeyour comment is wrong Darin i have a friend who was adopted and “sealed” to his family so did he marry his brothers? no. a man can only be married to one woman but sealed to more than one. when you are married it is with you physical body when your spouse “moves on” so to speak than a man can re marry and get sealed with another woman. but a woman can not be sealed to another man the can be married thou not by the church but by the state.

LikeDislikeIm sorry to say Darin. Mormonism is not true. Mormons don’t know what they believe.

LikeDislikeBrooke, polygamy went on long after the 1890 Manifesto that declared an end to polygamy. As a 6th generation Mormon I have many ancestors that were in polygamous marriages after that date. Do your homework on Mormon history. BTW, I’m now a first generation exMormon because I actually did the research.

LikeDislikeAt the time the Pratt’s and Romney’s were sent directly by Brigham Young into Mexico to
set up colonies and continue the practice of POLYGAMY –
This was done at the time when the UTAH TERRITORY first started to Petition the USA to be included
with STATEHOOD … one requirement of the Government was that Polygamy be abolished ,
This was done in 1890 and Utah became a State in 1896 -
Mitt Romney’s father was born in the established Mexican Colony in 1907 –
As many have posted — do you think after the doctrine change in 1890 that all POLYGAMOUS
relationships ended ??? what would become with ALL the children and multitude of wives ??
What was common practice in past when a Mormon man died that other Mormon men would “take them into the home” (as either sealed or unsealed )
Simply Stated the decree of 1890 was the only way to Statehood ,,,,
and in most cases did not change existing family structure for some many years

I know that He loves you like a son and knows you and has a plan for you. I hope you find peace in this life! I really do! I hope you can let go of whatever drives you to feel this way! Remember, no matter what that God loves you! No matter what! I’m sorry for whatever happened, I truly am.. if ya wanna talk you can just reply to this:) take care!

LikeDislikeActually the next marriage is exactly that, and is performed and solemnized in a temple. The church claims no direct revelation to do so, and many did not, when it comes to stopping the practice. In fact not one president of the church after Smith ever uttered the words ‘THUS SAITH THE LORD’. Two of Smith’s first wives were 14 and 16. If you want good research, check out the fate of children of divorces.

LikeDislikeBrooke,
If a man marries and is sealed to a woman and she dies and then is married and sealed to another woman – when they all die – who exactly IS he married to then? Are you saying no one will be married to anyone in the afterlife? The fact is that if the three of them are all together for eternity who cares if you call it marriage or sealing. The point is that the first wife might have been waiting to live for eternity with her husband and his “new” wife might turn her view of heaven into quite the opposite.
LikeDislikeBeing Sealed and being Married are NOT the same. People are sometimes sealed just to their children or children they have adopted. Does this mean that people are married to their children? The answer to that is no. A friend of mine’s mother was divorced (did not marry my friends father in the temple and was not sealed to him) and later came back to the church and was sealed to her daughter.
They are very different things. Being sealed simply means being connected to another person in the afterlife.
LikeDislikeIf being Sealed and Married are not the same, then answer this question. Can someone get Sealed in the Temple without having a Marriage License from the local authority issuing them? The answer is no, so being Sealed and Married are the same. I doubt anyone could get Sealed in the Temple without an official Marriage License.
LikeDislikeYes, I was sealed to my parents in the temple without a marriage license.
LikeDislikeYou are misinformed or duplicitous. The ordinances of sealing men to women as husband and wife IS NOT the same as sealing children to parents. The prayers are different and obviously the expectations are as well. In the temple and in Mormonism the two ordinances ARE NOT seen as interchangeable as you suggest.
TEMPLE MARRIAGE (SEALING OF SPOUSES)
[The sealer sits at the head of the altar with two witnesses, one seated at his right and the other at his left. The bride and groom kneel at opposite sides of the altar, facing one another, clothed in the robes of the holy priesthood. They take each other by the right hand in the patriarchal grip.]
SEALER: Brother _________, do you take Sister _________ by the right hand and receive her unto yourself to be your lawfully wedded wife, for time and all eternity, with a covenant and promise that you will observe and keep all the laws, rites, and ordinances pertaining to this holy order of matrimony in the new and everlasting covenant; and this you do in the presence of God, angels, and these witnesses of your own free will and choice?
GROOM: Yes.
SEALER: Sister _________, do you take Brother _________ by the right hand and give yourself to him to be his lawfully wedded wife, and receive him to be your lawfully wedded husband, for time and all eternity, with a covenant and promise that you will observe and keep all the laws, rites, and ordinances pertaining to this holy order of matrimony in the new and everlasting covenant; and this you do in the presence of God, angels, and these witnesses of your own free will and choice?
BRIDE: Yes.
SEALER: By virtue of the holy priesthood and the authority vested in me, I pronounce you, _________ and _________, legally and lawfully husband and wife for time and all eternity; and I seal upon you the blessings of the holy resurrection, with power to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection, clothed in glory, immortality, and eternal lives.
I seal upon you the blessings of kingdoms, thrones, principalities, powers, dominions, and exaltations, with all the blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and say unto you: be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth, that you may have joy and rejoicing in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
All these blessings, together with all the blessings appertaining unto the new and everlasting covenant, I seal upon you by virtue of the holy priesthood, through your faithfulness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
SEALING OF CHILDREN TO PARENTS
[Parents and children gather around the altar. Husband and wife take each other by the right hand in the patriarchal grip; the children place their right hands on top of their parents' joined hands.]
SEALER: By the authority of the holy priesthood, I seal you, [the children are named individually], to your father _________ and to your mother _________ for time and all eternity, as an heir [or heirs] as though you were born in the new and everlasting covenant; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

LikeDislikeTo clarify my previous post—
There are expectations that go along with a sealing that are defined at the time the ordinance is performed. The prayers (see the prayers I posted previously) given at the time outline the relationship as it wil exist in eternity if sealed by the holy spirit of promise. True, earthly marriages may end but the expectation of a sealing between a man and woman— if sealed in life as husband and wife is that the will continue as such — if at all. These are more than just vague connections for the next life. They define specific connections and roles

LikeDislikeCompared with Newt Gingrich, not that impressive. Also Christians can remarry.
LikeDislikePeople can get married in the temple without being sealed but not the other way around. The church also recognizes marriages not affiliated with the church or its temples. And yes, men can be sealed to more than one woman but can only be married to one woman at a time. A new development, however, allows a woman to be sealed to more than man, but only after all parties involved are deceased. Problematic? Possibly. Progressive? Yes!
LikeDislikeI’d love to see references showing that is actually happens. From my research it seemed that only me could be sealed to more than one woman not vice versa.
That said I don’t see it at progressive as you do. Women cannot choose to be sealed to more than 1 husband while alive but can 1) have someone do it for her after death or 2) have it done because some decides for her after her death. Sorry but not all that progressive IMO.

LikeDislikeI live in Mona, Utah. A few miles down the road from me is a mormon polygamist colony called Rocky Ridge. Mormons still practice polygamy, openly and with impunity, in the state of Utah. Not mainstream LD$ mormons but, countless other mormon sects are still committing the felony of polygamy. The LD$ mormons do condone and endorse the practice of polygamy though. The mormon polygamist felons have set up colonies, where they openly practice their felony without fear of prosecution, from one end of the state to the other. The mormon run justice department of the mormon run state of Utah refuses to prosecute any of the state’s 30,000+ mormon polygamist felons due to the religious credentials of the mormon polygamist felons.
LikeDislikeCohabitation is not a felony. Acting like you’re married and living like you’re married is not being actually married. you’ll find they have one legal wife and the rest of the “wives” only co-habitate. Again co-habitation is not a crime.

LikeDislikethanks for making this point. I never understood why polygamy was illegal when there really is no polygamy, merely one wife who allows her husband the luxury of extra-marital affairs. (I’m not LDS.)

LikeDislikeMy great-grandmother came ‘across the plains’. She was the lone member of her faimly to do so. At 16, she established a courtship with a young men who was on the same trek. Upon reaching SLC, the boy was sent of on some specious mission, and she was assigned to one of the old farts who met every wagon train looking to choose the ‘hottest’ girls for themselves. This guys first wife was pissed and forced the young lady to live in a chicken coop. But old Bro. B. managed to get her preggers 10 times. My grandmother, a card carrying Mormon til she died at 96 (The above girl’s daughter), was often heard to say, “What amounted to their ‘Holy’ Priedthood is about 6 inches long and hangs between their legs”.
LikeDislikeAlso, if a woman wants to get sealed to her second husband after a divorce, she cannot until the first husband agrees to break the seal. But not vice versa – the man can be sealed to more than one woman without the permission of the first woman. This IS spiritual polygamy.
LikeDislikeThe opening post is correct. Yes, polygamy is still practiced. So what. It will soon be unsuspended among the living too (for those who don’t know, polygamy was merely suspended in 1890. God has allowed it for thousands of years and it’s bard of the basic makeup of men and women).

LikeDislikeI worked as a labor and delivery in a local hospital in Arizona in the 1980′s. The local mormons often brought their “second wives” or the “sister wives” in to deliver their babies. A “married” couple would come in with a YOUNGER gal, ready to deliver . The hospital was run by old Mormon families in the area. We nurses were told this would be a “private adoption” situation. Don’t call a social worker, etc. The husband and wife would coach the young girl through labor, help with the baby then they would all go home together.Polygamy was certainly still being practiced in Mesa, Arizona!
I also lived in a neighborhood where our Mormon neighbor had an “estate” with two houses built on it. There were separate “wings ” in each house for his MANY children and the women taking care of them. He recently passed away and the folks who bought his acreage knocked down the houses with “wings” to build a single family home.
Now, in this country, you are permitted to cohabitate, and some “common law” partners are even given benefits such as health care. So, being officially married to one woman and having 2 or 3 more living in our home and bearing your children is not illegal, right?
It’s when the young gals are forced into it that i see the legal issues. And from what i saw, a lot of these “sister wives” were under the age of 18, sometimes on their 2nd or third baby!
It’s a strage world , that’s for sure. I’m all for protecting our children.Let grown ups do as they will. But protect the young women.

LikeDislikeMormons will bullshit you with the Idea that the church stopped poligomy. The real reason was the state of Utah couldn’t be admitted to the union until poligomy was abolished. The money and other benefits of statehood were the reason the church leaders had those “revelations”. All came down to the mormons greed. Having alot of morons in our area(including my brother and his family) I regularly see these hypocrits and clannish asshole. Most morons wont have a thing to do with you until they want something then theyre you best friend. After they get what they want out of your pocket they’ll ignore and shun you till they need again.

LikeDislikeI know a LDS Mormon who has many children with several women. He told my mother that Mormons do not allow polygamous marriage, but they do allow one to have “friends” women. I know very well because he was the husband of my sister.
I have also seen one of the missionaries who spent the night in the apartment of a Mormon woman without being married to her.
So Mormons may allow older members certain freedoms that other levels of Mormons do not know…
